What are these oddly named files in my Fabric Swatch folder?

I have a folder with all my fabric swatches (in Documents hierarchy). I don't kown if this means anything, but for background info: years ago, when I first started adding the files, they were saved as BMP. Now I save them as jpg format.
Since activating the "hidden items" in the view menu (primarily to access the Wilcom files in the Program Data section), I've noticed that there are several files labeled like so: ._name.bmp in my fabric swatch folder.
They only appear when I have the view HIDDEN Items activated.
This isn't that big of a deal, except when I am accessing the files from within Wilcom. I have to scroll through several dozen of them before seeing the "good" files.
What are these "hidden" files ( ._name.bmp)? Can they be deleted?
