e4.2 Won't Open was created by LindeeG
Was working in e4.2 when I got an exception error, Now when I try to launch it, I just get the spinning cursor,
Things I tried:
1 - quitting and reopening Windows (I'm running on Parallels on Mac)
2 - restarting computer
3 - unplugging/re-inserting dongle
No effect. No error message. Just spinning cursor and then nothing.
Any ideas to get it to run again?

Try below steps before reinstalling software.
goto C:\Program Files\Wilcom\EmbroideryStudio_e4.2 folder
delete all files in the recover folder.
rename defaults.dfl file to defaults.old, from RES folder.
Copy defaults.dfl. file from bin folder to res folder

Brenden, I was trying to avoid reinstalling.
Is there a way to preserve all your settings? I know I can backup my templates but what about all those other things like scrolling, mouse noises, crosshair cursor and all that?

Based on yogisaw's post on deleting RECOVER folder and refreshed DEFAULTS.DFL file methods in a more graphic interface way (or more elegant way), (and hopefully this method can preserve customised settings such as toolbar locations).
To delete RECOVER folder:
Simply use Purge Recovery from Windows Start menu.
To rewind DEFAULTS.DFL file and hopefully recover customised settings:
Options 1 and 2 (both not recommended) : There are macOS' built-in Time Machine, and Parallels Desktop also offers something called Snapshots.
However using Time Machine for Parallels Virtual Machine is not practical, so is the Snapshots feature by Parallels.
Options 3: use Windows 10's File History.
Note: it is disabled by default, you will need to turn it on first.
(Settings -> Update and Security -> Backup)
Once enabled, click "More options"
Make sure C:\Program Files\Wilcom\EmbroideryStudio_e4.2 is in the list.
(If you don't want to enable File History for the whole e4.2 folder, I would suggest:
RES, BIN, TEMPLATE, WLETTER, and USERLETW folders.)
Now, in the unlikely event that you need to revert back to your previous DEFAULTS.DFL version, simply go to the file in Windows Explorer (C:\Program Files\Wilcom\EmbroideryStudio_e4.2\RES\DEFAULTS.DFL) , right click and select Properties from context menu.
Within the Properties window, you should see the Previous Versions.
All the available versions should be there if needed.
